The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Philadelphia District is leading a $38.2 million beach replenishment project to combat erosion and strengthen storm protection for Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, and Longport.

Awarded to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, the project involves placing 1.2 million cubic yards of sand onto the island’s beaches from designated offshore borrow sites. Work began in November 2024 and is expected to wrap up in four months.

This effort is part of a long-term coastal protection plan, restoring dunes, access paths, and sand fencing to enhance storm surge defense and preserve the fragile coastal ecosystem. The last replenishment in Atlantic City was in 2020, and severe erosion left casinos like The Hard Rock and Ocean Resort with little beachfront. Some, like Ocean Casino Resort, even spent $600,000 on sand, but the solution was temporary.

Currently, crews are widening 20 blocks of shoreline, extending to MLK Jr. Blvd Beach, ensuring a more resilient and visitor-friendly coast for years to come.
