Labor Day weekend is the unofficial last call for summer on the Main Line, and this year's lineup gives residents plenty of reasons to get out before the season turns. In West Chester, four blocks of Gay Street close to traffic for the Open Air Market, letting restaurants spill into the street for al fresco dining and shopping all weekend long.
For something more theatrical, Longwood Gardens' Fireworks and Fountains show returns for Labor Day weekend with a space-themed program called The Final Frontier, pairing choreographed fireworks with music from Elton John and the Beastie Boys against the backdrop of the 1,719-jet Main Fountain Garden. Downtown Phoenixville is also closing its main street to vehicles for a weekend of shopping, dining, and a film at the Colonial Theatre, while a Chester County winery lawn hosts four straight days of live music to close out the holiday. Whichever direction you head, this is the weekend to soak up the last of summer on the Main Line.
