Market East Makeover Underway with $60M Backing from Comcast and 76ers Stakeholders

Philadelphia's Market East is turning a corner.

Once known as America’s premier commercial corridor, the area connecting City Hall to Independence Hall is receiving a long-overdue revival—this time, with heavyweight backing. In a strategic real estate play, Comcast and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment [owners of the Philadelphia 76ers] have jointly acquired a major portion of East Market Street, signaling a renewed commitment to elevate Center City’s future.

The acquisitions, finalized at the end of June, include four parcels between Ninth and 11th Streets totaling $56 million. While exact development plans remain undisclosed, the message is clear: this corridor is no longer being overlooked.

“This partnership isn’t just about ownership—it’s about impact,” said David Adelman, chairman of the joint venture. “We want to be part of re-energizing East Market Street.”

The investment comes on the heels of a shift in arena plans. Initially slated for a controversial Center City location, the 76ers have now pivoted toward a new South Philly sports complex. Still, their financial presence remains planted in Market East, laying the groundwork for what could be a significant uptick in property value, foot traffic, and investor interest.

Meanwhile, the city is preparing a master plan for East Market Street’s future. Though separate from the current redevelopment by Comcast and the Sixers, both timelines will likely intersect in ways that will shape Philadelphia’s urban landscape for years to come.

If you're considering buying, investing, or selling in Center City or anywhere along the Main Line or Jersey Shore, now is the time to get informed. This moment is more than a headline—it’s a signal.
