Rare Ardrossan Estate Hits the Market—A Chance to Own a Piece of Main Line History

Rare Ardrossan Estate Hits the Market—A Chance to Own a Piece of Main Line History

A rare piece of Main Line history is now available. Hopelands, a 14-acre estate in Wayne, part of the renowned Ardrossan Estate, is on the market for $5.5 million. Owned by the Montgomery Scott family, the estate famously inspired The Philadelphia Story, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Period fireplaces are one of the details that give the manor its unique character.

Built in 1840, the 7,040-square-foot main house features nine bedrooms, original stonework, wide plank hardwood floors, and period fireplaces. A 1,930-square-foot carriage house, four-car garage, horse stables, and tennis court complete the property. The estate was renovated in 1930 by Horace Trumbauer, the architect behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
An expansive library is on the main floor of the home.

Protected by the Brandywine Conservancy, the land cannot be subdivided, ensuring forever-protected views. However, buyers can renovate or add modern amenities like a pool.

With much of Ardrossan already sold, this is a rare chance to own a piece of Main Line history.

The home was renovated in 1930 by famed architect Horace Trumbauer who designed Lynnewood Hall, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
