A Classic Home with a Contemporary Vision
A 1937 Georgian-style brick home in Haverford captivated its new owners with its stately charm. However, its off-center entryway and dated interior didn’t align with their vision of timeless elegance. "Our style is classic with a twist," the owner shares. "We wanted a warm, refined space with clean lines and a personalized feel."
Bringing this 7,800-square-foot estate into the modern era required a team of skilled professionals. Leading the transformation were Ernst Brothers + Builders of Lower Gwynedd and Malvern’s Period Architecture, both known for preserving historic integrity while enhancing livability.
A Facade That Honors Tradition
The homeowners took the opportunity to revamp the exterior while addressing a leaking roof. The solution? Replacing the flat-roofed sections with elegant pitched roofs that reflect the balanced proportions of Georgian architecture. Out went the asphalt shingles, replaced with copper-accented synthetic slate, enhancing both durability and aesthetic appeal.
To achieve symmetry, the front entry was relocated to the center, creating a grander, more formal arrival experience. “By repositioning the door, we enhanced the home's curb appeal and improved the functionality of the stair hall,” says Joe Mackin, cofounder of Period Architecture.
Matching the original brickwork was one of the biggest challenges. “The Ernst team was meticulous, ensuring the new bricks and grout blended seamlessly with the old,” the owner says. The new entryway opens into a striking foyer, where a curved staircase welcomes guests in style.
Refined Interiors with a Personal Touch
Inside, Philadelphia-based interior designer Michele Plachter brought the homeowners' vision to life. Inspired by a striped sock in their favorite colors, Plachter created a moody, dramatic dining room, complete with dark floral wallpaper that adds depth and character.
- The study features rich slate blue walls and intricate moldings, evoking timeless sophistication.
- The living room and kitchen are designed with soft creams and whites, enhancing the home's light, airy feel.
- A barrel-vaulted vestibule now connects the new foyer to the dining room, concealing a hidden cloakroom behind paneling for seamless symmetry and functionality.
“This home is a perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury,” the owner reflects.
